Greta Van Susteren says newly obtained FBI documents expose a devastating failure during the 2010 Aruba sting targeting Joran van der Sloot.
The operation was designed to record van der Sloot allegedly accepting $25,000 in an extortion and wire-fraud scheme involving information about the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. But despite recording the transaction, the FBI did not arrest him.
Van der Sloot left Aruba and traveled to Peru. Two weeks later, on the fifth anniversary of Natalee Holloway’s disappearance, he murdered 21-year-old Stephanie Flores.
In this special “Record Rewind” edition of the “Greta Wire” podcast, Greta reveals what the FBI’s own notes say about the decision not to make an arrest. Former U.S. Attorney Jay Town joins her to explain the missed federal charges, the lack of accountability and why authorities had what he calls a wire-fraud “layup.”
Greta also recounts her years-long effort to bring van der Sloot to the United States—and the cold call that helped persuade Peru to approve his temporary transfer to face federal charges.
