– UC Berkeley mathematics professor Zvezdelina Stankova warns that some incoming college students are five to eight years behind in math, with basic skills such as fractions becoming a problem even at elite universities.
– Stankova says COVID learning loss, grade inflation and years of inadequate preparation leave some students unable to handle calculus, engineering and other demanding STEM courses.
– She argues standardized testing such as the SAT can provide universities with an important baseline for determining whether students are academically prepared for rigorous programs.
– Stankova warns that AI can become a dangerous academic crutch when students use it to avoid reading, thinking and solving difficult problems themselves.
– She says lowering course standards to accommodate underprepared students can ultimately hurt stronger students by forcing professors to cut material and reduce academic rigor.
