Top news right now: California Governor Gavin Newsom has declined to endorse the recommendations of his state’s Reparations Task Force for cash payouts of up to $1.2 million to black residents. Newsom cited the complexity of addressing the “legacy” of slavery and the need for systemic change beyond cash payments. The task force, appointed by Newsom, is expected to submit its final report later this summer. If the California State Legislature approves the recommendations, the total reparations bill could reach $800 billion, more than double the state’s annual budget.
