A historic federal law-enforcement operation targeting violent crime in Chicago resulted in nearly 500 arrests, scores of illegal firearms taken off the streets and the recovery of 24 missing children, according to federal officials.
NEWSMAX crime correspondent Jason Mattera reports on Operation New Dawn, an unprecedented partnership involving 11 federal agencies. Authorities say those arrested included homicide suspects, narcotics traffickers, criminals with cartel connections and repeat violent offenders accused of driving violence across Chicago-area neighborhoods.
Federal prosecutors also criticized what they described as a “catch-and-release” system in Cook County, saying some dangerous suspects had previously been taken into custody only to be released by local judges. Officials say the operation’s coordinated federal approach could become a model for confronting violent crime in other major American cities.
