TAXES: A lesson from Phil Mickelson and Warren Buffett

From Alexander Green, Chief Investment Strategist, The Oxford Club:

Phil Mickelson is one of the greatest golfers of the modern era.

He has won 42 PGA Tour events, including three Masters titles, a PGA Championship and a British Open Championship.

Only a U.S. Open title keeps him out of that elite group of golfers – Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods – who have won all four Grand Slam events.

But he came awfully close in 2006.

That was the year he came into the final hole of the U.S. Open at Winged Foot with a one-shot lead. Yet he stunned the world with a tee shot so wild it flew into the corporate tents. He then tried to hook a 3-iron around a tree.

It didn’t work. He double-bogeyed the hole and lost the tournament. Mickelson still refers to it as the worst moment…
